How are daily fantasy sports winnings taxed?
By the W2gMatch team · Sources checked 09-06-2026 · General information, not tax advice.
Daily fantasy winnings are taxable income. DraftKings, FanDuel and PrizePicks report net annual winnings on Form 1099-MISC once they reach the reporting threshold, $2,000 for 2026, up from $600. Below that no form is sent but the income is still reportable. The IRS treats DFS entry fees as wagers, so losses follow the gambling loss rules.
The form and the threshold
Daily fantasy operators report on Form 1099-MISC (the information return for prizes and other miscellaneous income), on a net annual basis for the product: entry fees paid against prizes won across the year. [1] [2] The reporting threshold for 1099-MISC prizes and other income rose from $600 to $2,000 for payments made in 2026, under section 70433 of the 2025 tax act, and is indexed after that. [3]PrizePicks describes issuing 1099-MISC on net winnings for the calendar year for most pick types. [4]
Below the threshold, no form is sent and the income is still reportable. [5]
Is fantasy play gambling for tax purposes?
For the loss deduction, the IRS Office of Chief Counsel answered in 2020: “The amount paid by a daily fantasy sports player to participate in a daily fantasy sports contest constitutes an amount paid for a wagering transaction under § 165(d).” [6] The memorandum reasons that a DFS entry is money risked on an uncertain event, the live performance of the players, with a return of the stake plus gains to the winner and nothing to the loser, which is a wager and not a prize. [6]
That places DFS losses under the same rule as sportsbook losses: deductible only by itemizing, only to the extent of wagering gains and, for tax years from 2026, only 90% of them. [7] It also means DFS wins and losses pool with other wagering gains and losses on the return.
Net on the form, gross on the return
The 1099-MISC figure is the operator's net for its product. The return separates winnings from losses. A player with $30,000 of DFS prizes and $28,000 of entry fees receives a 1099-MISC showing net winnings, and reports winnings and losses on their own lines with the loss subject to the limits above. The contest history the operator provides is what shows the gross figures.
Pick'em and season-long leagues
Pick'em products on the same apps are reported the same way, on 1099-MISC. [2] A private season-long league with a buy-in has no operator filing anything; the winner's prize is still income, and the memorandum's reasoning about entry fees applies to the losers' buy-ins as well. Keep the league's records the way you would a session log.

I won $1,500 on DraftKings DFS in 2026 and got no form. Do I report it?
Yes. The $2,000 threshold decides whether a 1099-MISC is filed, not whether the income is taxable.
Can I deduct DFS entry fees?
As wagering losses: only by itemizing, only up to total wagering gains for the year and, from tax year 2026, only 90% of the losses. They cannot be netted against winnings on the income line.
