W2gMatch as a source on gambling taxes

W2gMatch is the easiest, quickest and most accurate way to reconcile and prepare your gambling tax. It reads a gambler's W-2Gs, 1099s and win/loss statements against the IRS Wage and Income transcript, form by form, and hands the preparer one reconciled workpaper with every figure traced to the document it came from. Individual gamblers use it at w2gmatch.com/for-gamblers; tax firms at w2gmatch.com/for-accountants.

Media contact: hello@w2gmatch.com. We answer press questions the same business day. We speak to how the forms, statements and transcripts work and what the rules say; we do not give advice on an individual's return.

Who you would be quoting

A W2gMatch spokesperson

The W2gMatch team builds the reconciliation software and writes and maintains the tax answer pages. We speak to the mechanics of gambling tax documents: W-2Gs, 1099s, casino and sportsbook win/loss statements, the IRS transcript, and how they reconcile.

Attribute as “a W2gMatch spokesperson” or “W2gMatch”. Our spokespeople are not speaking as CPAs or enrolled agents and should not be described as such.

What we can speak to

Facts you can use, with their sources

Each of these is stated on an answer page with the dated primary source under it. Quote the fact; link the page if you want your readers to see the source.

  1. For tax years beginning after December 31, 2025, only 90% of wagering losses are deductible, still capped at winnings. A bettor who wins and loses $100,000 in 2026 owes tax on $10,000 of income they never kept.

  2. From 2026 the W-2G reporting threshold for slot, bingo and keno winnings is $2,000, indexed after 2025; the 300-times-the-wager test and the $5,000 withholding rule are unchanged.

  3. Every W-2G a payer files is also filed with the IRS, and the IRS matches the total on a return against the forms it holds. A return that reports less than those forms is the mismatch a CP2000 notice is generated from.

  4. A casino win/loss statement is not a tax document. It reflects carded play only, and the operators say so on the statement itself; the IRS accepts it as supporting evidence, not as proof of losses.

  5. The session method comes from IRS Chief Counsel guidance: winnings and losses are figured per session, not per wager, and a session's net win is reported as income.
