A CPA Matches the Last W-2G Like It's a Title Game. General information, not tax advice.Watch on YouTube

Las Vegas, 2:07 a.m. One W-2G left unmatched against the client's IRS transcript, and it gets called like the final seconds of a title game. Then Penny explains what the same night means in tax year 2026. Jack and Penny were first introduced as Larry and Diane, the names you may still see or hear in this film.

The fact behind the joke: why the last w-2g matters

  • The IRS Wage and Income transcript lists the information returns filed under the client's Social Security number, including every Form W-2G, for the current and nine prior years. It is the same data the IRS matches against, which is where CP2000 notices come from. Using the transcript for a gambling client →
  • A W-2G on the transcript that the client never received is still reported: the payer filed it with the IRS, which will match it to the return. A W-2G on the transcript but never received →
  • W-2Gs, 1099-Ks and win/loss statements will not tie out by design; reconciling means explaining each difference with a document, not forcing the totals to match. Reconciling W-2G, 1099-K and win/loss statements →
  • From tax year 2026 only 90% of losses are deductible, capped at winnings, if the client itemizes: win $100,000 and lose $100,000, and $10,000 is taxable. When only 90% counts, every statement counts. The 90% gambling loss cap for 2026 →

High rollers don't guess. They reconcile.

W-2Gs, the IRS transcript and every win/loss statement matched into one workpaper your team reviews.
